Honouring the Fallen at Burnham-on-Crouch

The following report comes from Gallipoli Association member, Walter Jenkins:

Yesterday, I had the honour of laying a Gallipoli Association-badged wreath at the Burnham-on-Crouch Town War Memorial during the service. My local RBL branch provided the wreath, and I managed to take a couple of photos of it later on.

My connection to the Gallipoli campaign is through my Great-Uncle Dacre Stoker. Additionally, I have researched the men from Burnham who died in the Great War, and I remembered five of them alongside the crewmen from HM AE2 who died as prisoners of war. Here are their names and stories:

  • Private K T Freeman, 1st Bn Essex Regiment, landed at Cape Helles on 25th April 1915, killed in action on 4th June 1915. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
  • Lance-Corporal E Hitchen, 4th Bn Essex Regiment, landed at Suvla Bay on 12th August 1915, killed in action on 20th August. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
  • Private J D Parchment, 2nd Bn Royal Fusiliers, landed at Cape Helles on 25th April 1915, wounded on 28th June, died in hospital on 30th June 1915. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
  • Private C J Partridge, 1st Bn Essex Regiment, landed at Cape Helles on 25th April 1915, wounded on 6th May, died of wounds on 10th May 1915, buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery.
  • Private A E Sains, 4th Bn Essex Regiment, landed at Suvla Bay on 12th August 1915, killed in action on 23rd August 1915. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
  • Private A W Witney, 4th Bn Essex Regiment, landed at Suvla Bay on 12th August 1915, wounded and evacuated to Malta, died of wounds, buried in Pieta Military Cemetery.
