Armistice Day, 11/11/2024
The WFA marked this year's Armistice Day, as always, by holding their ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London and we were delighted to be invited to join the ceremony.
The tradition, begun by the Old Contemptibles’ Association in 1926, was passed on to the WFA in 1994. The Old Contemptibles’ Association carried out their act of remembrance at the Whitehall Cenotaph on 11 November each year up to 1993. Sadly, there were no Chums (members of the association) able to attend the Armistice Day service in 1994 and that is when the WFA came in to ensure that the act of remembrance each Armistice Day continued.
We were very lucky to be asked to participate by laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. GA Historian and Webmaster Stephen Chambers was joined by one of our youngest members Sophie Haworth who laid the wreath on behalf of the Gallipoli Association.
The service of remembrance was followed by the annual church service at The Guards Chapel. We would very much like to thank the Western Front Association for the invitation today.
