On November 4, 2024, Her Excellency Jill Morris CMG, His Majesty’s Ambassador to Turkey, graciously hosted a memorable reception at the British Embassy in Ankara. This diplomatic gathering was in honour of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), celebrating its significant contributions not just at Gallipoli, but on a global scale. The event also aimed to unite those who appreciate the importance of commemoration, fostering stronger cooperation.

After warmly welcoming the distinguished guests, Ambassador Morris introduced two notable figures: Claire Horton CBE, the Director General of the CWGC, and Ismail Kaşdemir, the Director of the Gallipoli Historic Site Directorate. Ambassador Morris highlighted their vital roles in the preservation and commemoration of Gallipoli. Following the introductions, Claire Horton delivered an engaging talk on the CWGC’s ongoing efforts, the challenges it faces, and its vision for the future.

Representing the Gallipoli Association was our Overseas Liaison Officer and Trustee, Thomas Iredale. He was able to use this valuable opportunity to share the mission of the Gallipoli Association and its Education and Outreach Programmes. His discussions with guests, including Claire Horton and diplomatic delegates from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, as well as the staff of the British Defence Attaché, underscored the importance of educational initiatives and reaching out to younger generations.
