Speech by Mr İsmail KAŞDEMİR – Director of the Gallipoli Historical Site- at the opening of the Gallipoli Association Conference 2019  at the RAF Club in London on 28 September

Dear Participants,

On the 104th Anniversary of the Battles of Gallipoli resulting in the Turkish Victory, I would like to start my words in the memory of our ancestors who have faced each other in the trenches and battles by expressing the pleasure of being here among you following your kind invitation. 

The battles which started on the 19th of February with the Allied Fleet bombarding our fortresses at the entrance of the Straits ended on the 9th of January 1916 with the Allied soldiers withdrawing quietly from W Beach. Among the fronts on every corner of the Empire during the First World War, the bloodiest battles took place in Gallipoli. When considered from this point, Çanakkale-Gallipoli is not only a name for the Turkish nation but a concept corresponding to the unity awareness of a nation, the victory, sense of self-devotion and spirit.  The pride we take as the sons of a generation who had triumphed against the most powerful armies of that era, is not only the pride of defeating the opposing side but also a proper pride of finding ourselves again as a nation.

Within this significant conference; in terms of their military, strategic and historical struggle, we will commemorate our ancestors who shed their blood heavily, lost their lives and hopes in the Gallipoli trenches.  And we should never forget that; each soldier who fell on this land while fighting on Gallipoli has been the symbol of international peace. Today, where the war which confronted them has been left far behind, while we commemorate the war with these kinds of activities, we have to use our courage and power in order to sustain peace which we have been able to reach due to the thousands of lives sacrificed. One of the most important missions of the Directorate on an international platform, where I am acting as Director, is to fulfil it.

You will be also seeing a presentation later today regarding many works and processes within the scope of authority and area of responsibility of our Directorate. Another subject that I would like to emphasise here is this; our Directorate acts today in collaboration and friendship with many countries which used to be against each other once.  In this respect, I wish to develop mutual projects and works regarding similar conferences, organisations and especially archival studies with the United Kingdom.

I would like to mention a sad loss we suffered the last month. Our Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Prof. Dr. Haluk Dursun wished to be here with you by finding time in his very busy schedule after he had heard that we had been invited here. The honourable history professor led us in the mission of building a cultural bridge in every activity that our Directorate had undertaken both at home and abroad. I would like to greet all of you on his behalf.

The Battles of Gallipoli, a milestone in world military and political history, is still not well enough known. Çanakkale is an important touchstone based on creating peace which we have to leave for the next generations with mutual insight, respect and tolerance developing on both sides. Where once prejudiced enemy soldiers fought each other in trenches before transforming into soldiers “respecting foes” and “war” transforming into a social and cultural event. Because of these factors which separate Gallipoli from the other fronts in the First World War, the Gallipoli Historic Site had been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2014 as “the best preserved First World War Sites”. With its coves, monuments, trenches, cemeteries, museums, commemorative sites and alternative tourism destinations, the Gallipoli Historic Site boasts the features of an Open Air Museum, as a tourist destination appealing to many visitor profiles.

I would like to thank you for your sincere welcome and the hospitality you have shown us since the beginning of our visit, and as I end my words, I would like to state that we would be very delighted to host you at the Gallipoli Historic Site and in Çanakkale.

Değerli Hâzirun,

Çanakkale Muharebelerinin Türk Zaferi ile sonuçlanmasının 104. Yılında, muharebede siperlerde, karşı karşıya gelmiş atalarımızın yüksek hatıraları önünde, burada sizlerle bulunmaktan ve nazik davetinizden dolayı duyduğum mutluluğu dile getirerek sözlerime başlamak istiyorum.

19 Şubat’ta müttefik donanmasının Boğaz’ın girişindeki tabyalarımızı bombardımanıyla başlayan muharebeler, 9 Ocak 1916’da son müttefik askerinin Tekke Koyu’ndan gizlice ayrılması ile son bulmuştur. 1.Dünya Savaşı’nda İmparatorluğun her köşesinde açılan cepheler arasında en kanlı çatışmalar Gelibolu’da yaşanmıştır. Bu açıdan Çanakkale-Gelibolu, Türk milletinin bilincinde yalnızca birer yer adı değildir, bir dönemi, bir milletin birlik bilincini, zaferi, fedakârlık anlayışını, o ruhu karşılayan bir kavramdır. Dönemin en güçlü ordularına karşı muzaffer olmuş bir neslin evlatları olarak duyduğumuz gurur, yalnızca karşı tarafı yenmiş olmanın gururu değil, aynı zamanda millet olarak kendimizi bulmuş olmanın da haklı gururudur.

Bu anlamlı konferansta; insan üstü bir dirençle kanlarını, hayatlarını ve umutlarını Gelibolu siperlerinde kaybeden atalarımızı, onların verdiği mücadeleyi askeri, stratejik ve tarihi açıdan anacağız. Ama şunu da unutmamalıyız ki; Gelibolu’da verilen bu mücadelede toprağa düşen her bir asker uluslararası barışın adeta timsali olmuştur. Onları karşı karşıya getiren savaşın çok geride kaldığı bugünlerde bu çeşit etkinliklerle savaşı anarken aynı zamanda binlerce gencimizin hayatını feda etmesiyle ulaştığımız barış ortamını sürdürmek ve korumak için de tüm cesaretimizi ve gücümüzü kullanmalıyız. Başkanı olduğum kurumun uluslararası platformdaki en önemli misyonlarından biri de bunu gerçekleştirmektir.

Başkanlığımızın geniş yetki sahası ve sorumluluk alanı içinde icra ettiği birçok iş ve işlemler hakkında ayrıca bir sunum izleyeceksiniz. Burada özellikle üstünde durmak istediğim bir başka konu da Başkanlığımızın; o dönem savaşın tarafları olduğu fakat şimdi müttefikimiz olan birçok devletle iş birliği ve dostluk ilişkileri içinde hareket ettiğidir. Bu açıdan Birleşik Krallık ile de bu ve benzeri konferans ve organizasyonlar ile özellikle arşiv çalışmaları konusunda ortak projeler ve çalışmalar geliştireceğimizi temenni etmekteyim.

Bu noktada geçtiğimiz ay yaşadığımız acı bir kaybı da burada anmak isterim. Kültür ve Turizm Bakan Yardımcımız Prof. Dr. Haluk Dursun bu konferansa davet edildiğimizi öğrenince yoğun çalışma temposu arasında bize zaman yaratarak burada sizlerle bulunmak istemişti. Tarih profesörü olan Sayın Hocamız yurt içi ve yurt dışında Başkanlığımızın katıldığı tüm etkinliklerde, oluşturmaya çalıştığımız kültür köprüsü olma misyonunda bize liderlik ederdi. Onun adına da hepinizi ayrıca selamlamak isterim.

Dünya askeri ve politik tarihinde bir dönüm noktası olan Çanakkale Muharebeleri hala yeterince biliniyor değil. Çanakkale; siperlerde birbirleriyle savaşan önyargılı düşman askerlerin “saygı duyulan rakibe”, “savaş”ın emsalsiz bir sosyal ve kültürel olaya dönüştüğü; tarafların arasında gelişen müşterek anlayış, saygı ve hoşgörü ile gelecek nesillere bırakmamız gereken barış ortamının yaratılması noktasında çok önemli bir mihenktaşı. Gelibolu Tarihi Alan’ı; 1.Dünya Savaşı’nın diğer cephelerinden ayrılan bu özellikleri ve “en iyi korunmuş 1.Dünya Savaşı Alanları” niteliğiyle UNESCO Dünya Miras Geçici Listesi’ne 2014 yılında kabul edilmiştir. Koyları, anıtları, siperleri, müzeleri, kabristanları, anı mekanları ve alternatif turizm destinasyonları ile adeta bir Açık Hava Müzesi niteliği taşıyan Gelibolu Tarihi Alan’ı farklı turist profillerine hitap eden bir turizm alanıdır.

Ziyaretimiz boyunca bizlere sunduğunuz içten karşılama ve konukseverlik için teşekkür ederek sözlerimi noktalarken sizleri Gelibolu Tarihi Alan’ında, Çanakkale’de ağırlamaktan büyük mutluluk duyacağımızı belirtmek isterim.
