CWG Chats - No Trace Found: The CWGC Cemeteries and Memorials of Gallipoli
Hosted by Burak Gündoğan and Harvey Henson, this talk provides an overview of the unique nature of commemoration on the Gallipoli Peninsula, highlighting both the historical context and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s ongoing responsibilities.
It will cover recent operational activities, including wildfire recovery efforts, collaborative works carried out with GHSD (Gallipoli Historical Site Directorate), and the discovery and planned re‑interment of scant remains.
The session will offer insight into how remembrance at Gallipoli continues to evolve in the lead‑up to ANZAC Day. It will also cover topics such as burials during the campaign and the early work of the Graves Registration Units, and the IWGC.

Guest speaker - Burak Gündoğan
Burak serves as the Country Manager for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) in Türkiye, within the Africa and Asia Region. In this role, he is responsible for the stewardship and preservation of CWGC cemeteries and memorials across Türkiye, ensuring the enduring commemoration of those who served and fell during the World Wars.
Burak works in close collaboration with governmental bodies, diplomatic missions, and local communities to uphold CWGC’s global standards of care and remembrance. He is the first Turkish citizen to be appointed to this position.

Guest speaker - Harvey Henson
Harvey Henson is the Volunteer Communication Coordinator at the CWGC, working within our Public Engagement team to engage with our global volunteer community.
Harvey is an amateur historian who has over ten years of experience visiting and researching the First World War battlefields of France, Belgium and Turkey.
Following an inspiring visit to the Gallipoli in 2024, he has begun extensively researching the cemeteries on the peninsula.
