In January 2015, TED Mersin College set up a project to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign in an unusual way: the students (aged 12-13) wrote letters to the families of Allied soldiers killed at Gallipoli, and to Lieutenant Ibrahim Naci, who died at Gallipoli and whose sensitive and moving diaries have recently been published.

Here are three of the students’ letters translated into English:

Letter by Sezer Celik grade 7

Letter by Esin Nur grade 7

Letter by Ali Eren Altioglu grade 7

They also designed postcards based on the war memorials on the Gallipoli peninsula, as well as T-shirts and a medallion.

The school is keen to maintain correspondence with other schools and the teachers’ contact details are in the ‘Two Trenches, One Letter’ PDF, which describes the project in full.
