Leith Academy

In 2014 a group of Prince’s Trust XL students from Leith Academy teamed up with Pilmeny Youth Centre to research the story of the local Territorial Army soldiers in the 7th Battalion Royal Scots Regiment who left for Gallipoli in 1915. Tragedy struck before they even left British soil, when 216 of them were killed in Britain’s worst-ever rail disaster at Quintinshill, near Gretna, on 22nd May 1915.  The students worked on this project, which included the Princess Royal laying a wreath at the cemetery where the soldiers are commemorated, and culminated in a trip to Gallipoli in October 2015, when the students visited the graves of the men who survived the rail accident only to lose their lives a few weeks later in Turkey.  The students made the following film about their project.
