This famous independent school is in the centre of Edinburgh, right next to the Castle.  Many former pupils joined the Royal Scots Regiment and went out to Gallipoli, along with some of the former pupils from Portobello High School. Tragically, no fewer than 23 men from George Heriot’s School were killed in a single day – 28th June 1915 – with another soldier dying from his wounds three days later.  See the list here.

In 1915 the school set up an exhibition about the experiences of George Heriot’s during the First World War, in Gallipoli as well as the Western Front and other theatres, and how it affected people at home in Edinburgh.
