Devon, UK: Barnstaple and Ilfracombe

Soldiers from rural North Devon left for Gallipoli in September 1915. Many of them died during the two months they spent on the peninsula. North Devon Museum joined up with the arts group DAISI to work with six local secondary schools on a range of projects inspired by the stories of men who signed up to Kitchener’s ‘New Armies’ and went out to Gallipoli. A lot of research was carried out using soldiers’ diaries and letters – collated here. We also took a party of students from West Buckland School to Gallipoli in October 2015.  They visited the battlefields where the Devon men fought and gave eulogies at the graves of those who never came home. The evaluation report on the North Devon projects is here.
