Manchester cemetery tour a success

The Gallipoli Association and the Manchester Military History Society presentedĀ a Gallipoli-themed tour of Southern Cemetery, Manchester, on Thursday 23 November 2023. An online Zoom talk followed in the evening.

The tours were very successful. 50 people joined the tour in the morning or afternoon with another 18 joining the Zoom talk (video below) in the evening. A number of those attending had a personal connection with Gallipoli.

As well as the Australians we found that most of the British graves were soldiers who served with the 1/6th Manchesters and were killed or wounded at Third Krithia on 4th June. We hope to hold a commemorative service to mark this event next year.

The south Manchester community responded to this project magnificently.

My thanks go to Tim Cockitt of the Manchester Military History Society, Peter McKessy and his team at the cemetery and Terry Boynes and the CWGC volunteers. Thursday 23rd was a brilliant day.

Ian Binnie, Education Co-ordinator and Trustee of the Gallipoli Association
