Compass saves officer: Major Gardiner's narrow escape

On Friday 24th November, Ian Binnie  (Education Co-ordinator and Trustee of the Gallipoli Association) gave a talk on Gallipoli to a group from the Friends of Shrewsbury Castle.

The talk went well. At the end one of the audience produced a diary that had been kept by a relative who served in Gallipoli. It belonged to Major N. G. Gardiner of the 2nd Royal Fusiliers, which he kept in his jacket pocket. Amazingly it had a bullet hole caused by a Turkish bullet. It would have killed Major Gardiner had he not had his compass behind the diary. The compass was wrecked, having a huge dent in it.
