THE WINTER ISSUE OF THE GALLIPOLIAN

The Winter 2011 issue of The Gallipolian, which will be published shortly, includes the Chairman’s Report for the year to October 2011, a report on the successful East Anglian Regional Lunch and commemorative events, including the Act of Remembrance at the Collingwood Memorial at Pimperne; the commemorations in Hawick; and the Memorial Service at Dersingham to remember the 5th Norfolks, and in particular the Sandringham Estate workers, who died at Suvla during the attack on 12 August.

The issue also highlights the appeal to establish a memorial in Reading to commemorate Trooper Fred Potts VC and contains more news about the replica of the Turkish minesweeper Nusret, and replies from members on questions posed in the last issue about the ‘John Bradbury’ (over-printed bank notes), ‘The River Clyde photograph’ and about the article on the diving expedition, ‘Project Beneath Gallipoli’.   There are further extracts from Peninsula Press – this time about weather on the Gallipoli Peninsula, and a report on a visit to Gallipoli made by members of the Gurkha Rifles.

The journal also contains a number of substantive articles dealing with various aspects of the campaign and its aftermath, including a number of personal or family related stories.  These include an account of the ‘1926 Pilgrimage to Gallipoli’; the life of ‘Bill Ross – Pioneer’ who served with the 10th Bn. Australian Infantry; an account of the loss of the transport Royal Edward by a survivor; and ‘The Story behind ‘Two Crosses placed in the Field of Remembrance’ – a moving account of a family’s loss.  As usual there are a number of Book Reviews and other interesting ‘snippets’.
