Jim is a member of South Shields Local History Group and researching the story of local hero, John Simpson Kirkpatrick -'The Man with the Donkey' at Gallipoli, and he would be grateful for your assistance.
On the evening of 28th April, the Royal Naval Division’s Marine Brigade landed at ‘ANZAC Cove’ and it’s Chatham and Portsmouth Battalion’s were fed piece meal into the thick of the battle and later they were supported by Nelson Battalion. Their wounded were tended to by ‘The Man with the Donkey’ and other members of his unit, the 3rd Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. (AAMC) and were put on boats for evacuation to hospital ships.
Jim would like to hear from anyone with information about ‘The Man with the Donkey’. He is also particularly interested in hearing from people whose ancestors met, saw or knew him at Gallipoli or were wounded and were brought to safety on his donkey?
If you can help, please get in touch or if you know of anyone who might have some information, please let them know about his appeal.
