     Scimitar Hill:

Copy and first photo from Keith Edmonds.  Further photos from Richard Szwed.

In  autumn 2008 there was a fire on Scimitar Hill. This destroyed many of the trees and shrubs on the hill and changed the landscape significantly. As a result of the fire the landscape may now more closely resemble that experienced by those who fought so bravely in this area in 1915. A visitor today will see the re-growth of plants and some strange varieties seem to be present. The contrast between darkened, burnt trees and new, bright red poppies is quite evocative.

The destruction of the trees and shrubs has revealed many trench systems as can be seen in the photos. Over 90 years ago, a fire arose on Scimitar Hill as a result of the fighting in this area in which so many lost their lives. How strange that we may now experience such a landscape ...

    The Sphinx:

    Garry Snowden

While at Gallipoli ahead of the Anzac Day commemorative services, I had the opportunity to indulge my passion for hiking the hills and gullies of the peninsula. There is no defined walking track up on to McCay’s Hill in the Anzac sector so I had to work to get into a position to take the attached photo of the south face of the Sphinx. Stretching beyond the Sphinx is North Beach, with Suvla Bay and Kiretch Tepe Sirt way in the distance to the north.

... and a little closer to home:

    Lieut. Arthur Tisdall RNVR, VC

Member Edward Holman has provided the two images below of the Tisdall Memorial at St George's Church, Deal, which he obtained during a recent visit.

Arthur Tisdall won his VC during the actions at 'V' Beach on 25th April. He was killed in action on 6th May 1915 during the second battle of Krithia and is commemorated on the Helles memorial. There are detailed articles on Tisdall in editions 61 and 71 of the Gallipolian, and the inscription on the memorial was also featured in issue 79.  The following link provided further information on Tisdall and also an account of the private sale of his Victoria Cross in 2005.

    Y Beach

Eceabat resident and Association member Gavin Pinar recently sent  the excellent photo of Y beach, below. Gavin recognises that this location is less accessible than some on the peninsula, and has in mind in particular those who may not have the opportunity to visit in person.

The Gallipoli Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum

Member Alan Breward is a volunteer at the NMA in Staffordshire, and recently sent in the photos below of the Gallipoli memorial there. This was designed and erected by Nadir Imamoglu in memory of his mother.
