Tours & Bursaries
In 1995 the Association began the Memorial Bursary Scheme. Each year since then, at the discretion of the committee, candidates have been awarded bursaries to enable them to visit the Gallipoli battlefields in order to study a particular aspect of the campaign. On their return they are asked to prepare an article for the Association journal and give a presentation to an invited audience.

The current series of Gallipoli battlefield tours began in 2001. Since then the Association has arranged tours most years for its members and guests.
The scene of every battle is visited and there is free time for individuals to re-visit any cemetery or area having special significance for them. Every evening the party can either go out together in a group, or as individuals to visit the many excellent local restaurants and roof-top bars.

We take advantage of our visit to see local sights: old Constantinople, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Then we head for the Gallipoli peninsula where we will discover that time has not diminished the atmosphere and grim beauty of the historic battlefield. We see where the Lancashire Fusiliers won six VCs before breakfast.
See why ANZAC Cove and Suvla Bay are an indelibly part of Australian and New Zealand military heritage. Discover how French and Indian soldiers as well as British troops of Kitchener's New Army faced up to appalling pressures.
Returning to Istanbul via the site of ancient Troy, we visit Scutari, where Florence Nightingale made her name in the Crimean War. There will be opportunities for shopping at the famous Spice Market and a Carpet Centre. There is an optional tour on the Bosphorus - teeming with life and shipping of all shapes and sizes - before we finish in a fish restaurant for lunch. Visits may be made to any war cemetery on the Gallipoli Peninsula during the tour as well as the Haydar Pasha War Cemetery in Scutari, outside Istanbul.

Our tour this year will be led by Colonel Christopher Newbould CBE, a member of the Association. He is Chief Battlefield Guide of Poppy Travel and has led many tours to Gallipoli. If you would like to join him, please contact Christopher on cjn@btinternet.com or write to: Colonel CJ Newbould CBE, Treetops, Shrewton, Salisbury SP3 4HD - Tel; 01980 621060.
